While gold glitters, investors are warned to be cautious when investing in this incredibly beautiful precious metal. Back in April 2011, gold was hitting levels of $1500 per ounce. Coincidentally, this happened not long after it was discovered that the Texas public university system owns $1 billion worth of gold. The gold is stored in a bank in New York and it comprises of 6600 bars of gold bullion.

There are stories going around that it is difficult to get silver and gold from the firm and that this has led to an FBI investigation into the matter. There are two men who are accused of fraud related peddling of gold into Ghana.

 

Back in 1980 gold hit a high of $850, which would equate to $2300 per ounce today and it dropped by more than $200 in only 7 days. Five years later gold was worth only $300 per ounce. Some people say that the past is the best predictor of the future and this sentiment should be kept in mind when investing in gold.

Gold like many other investment vehicles can bubble and this is not good. Investments in technology and property have gone this route and there is no reason why gold should not follow suit. Americans are unable to buy gold using their 401(K) s, however there are other legal ways to invest.
