In terms of gold investment, the Krugerrand dates all the way back to 1964 when it was
decided that this was a way for the man in the street to own gold. The South African Mint released the first
series of these coins in 1967 and the Kruger Coin became the
first of its kind in the world at the time.

On the one side of the
coin there is a design of Paul Kruger who was
the 5th president of the country. Paul Kruger was also instrumental in leading the Boers against the British
soldiers. The other side has a Springbok design on it and this is the national symbol of South Africa.
“Fine gold” and “South Africa” are four words
that are minted on the coin in both English and Afrikaans.

It is possible to obtain these
coins in 4 different weights and sizes. Krugerrands are considered to be legal tender in South
Africa. This is according to the banking regulations and the South African
constitution.
