Wits Gold mine appears to have a profitable mining project underground thanks to the DBM property in the Free State. It has been reported that Wits Gold has millions and millions of gold ounces in its control. Sadly though, the perception of this mine is that much of the gold is so deep that it makes mining it rather costly and therefore impossible to mine during the current economic climate in South Africa.

Julius Malema, the ANC youth leader has not helped the cause of investment in South Africa with his pro mine nationalization comments that he keeps making. Thankfully, at this stage, the ANC officially is emphatically against nationalizing mines in the country. Even the unionists and the Communist Party are against nationalizing of the mines at this stage.

Wits Gold mine is now possibly able to capitalize on the fact that within the South African context, it has some shallow mining operations that it can use to produce gold. This is specifically the DBM project in the Free State. Mining can be done relatively cost effectively and within a reasonable time frame of 4 years.
